Ownership Unbundling of Energy Distribution Companies: The Netherlands - The organization of the energy sector in Europe is changing rapidly due to the ongoing liberalization process. One of the crucial elements concerns the position of the network companies. Although the 2003 Electricity and Gas Directives call for a legal unbundling, it is apparent that such unbundling might not be sufficient. While some EU Member States already have initiated ownership unbundling of the transmission sector, the Dutch Government currently aims at introducing ownership unbundling for the distribution sector as well. A Bill on ownership unbundling of the energy distribution companies is presented to Parliament. This article will analyse the pros and cons of this Bill.
