Zusammenfassung: 1. Asterosaponins in the gonads of the starfish Asterias rubens were quantified during the annual reproductive cycle by a haemolytic procedure.2. In the testes, saponins were present-at very low concentrations-only immediately after the spawning. They were absent for the greater part of the year.3. In the ovaries, saponins were present throughout the year; their concentration showed a clear pattern. Concentrations are low in summer, increase in autumn and are high in winter until the spawning.4. The saponins are localized in the oocytes. The deposition of the saponins in the ovaries is linearly related to the gonad-index throughout the year.5. Spawning inhibition by asterosaponins seems to be improbable in Asterias rubens. The possible physiological function of the ovarian saponins is discussed.
