Zusammenfassung: 1. The metabolism of vertebrate-type steroids was studied in three crustacean species, i.e. the common edible crab, Cancer pagurus, the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, and the brine shrimp, Artemia salina.2. In hepatopancreas and ovarian tissue of Cancer, several enzymatic activities were demonstrated: 20α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (20α-HSD), 17β-HSD, 3β-HSD/5-ene-4-ene isomerase, C"1"7-C"2"0 lyase, glucuronyltransferase, sulphotransferase and acyltransferase.3. Tissues of Macrobrachium and Artemia converted pregnenolone mainly to water soluble conjugates and apolar esters. Minor activities of 20α-HSD were also observed.4. Several important enzymatic and catabolic steps, known from studies with vertebrates, were not detected.
