Zusammenfassung: 1.|The effect of acclimation temperature and heat shock on the increased thermal resistance (thermotolerance) of the brine shrimp Artemia and other crustaceans is reviewed.2.|The pattern of heat shock protein synthesis in Artemia is reviewed and related to the ability of Artemia to survive elevated temperatures. The general role of heat shock proteins in the ability of crustaceans to survive normal temperature fluctuations is discussed.3.|It is proposed that the temperature-dependent synthesis of the disaccharide trehalose may be at least partly responsible for the development of thermotolerance in crustaceans.
