Prototype of a mercuric iodide X-ray camera: Preliminary results

We present a prototype of an X- and γ-ray camera based on a semiconductor crystal of mercuric iodide (HgI"2) having a cross-sectional area of 10 x 10 mm^2 and a thickness of 0.5 mm. Two orthogonal sets of 20 charge-collecting μstrips are deposited on the two opposite surfaces of the detector givin...g a pixel size of 0.5 x 0.5 mm^2. Using commercial hybrid preamplifiers several experimental tests have been performed in order to assess the performance of this device.
