Zusammenfassung: The most powerful facilities of steady high magnetic fields in Japan are at the Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, Sendai. The field of 31 T is produced by a hybrid magnet consisting of an outer large-bore superconducting magnet and an inner water-cooled resistive magnet of 8 MW power. The laboratory is open to visiting scientists and engineers for cooperative research prograns. In addition to the research and development of high-field superconductors and permanent magnet materials, basic researches on superconductivity, quantum transport properties, magnetic-field-induced phase transitions and chemical effects of high magnetic fields have been conducted. This paper presents a brief review of these works.
