Pumping Station Operations

In an assessment of all pumping stations in New York City it was concluded that grit removal and screening are unnecessary, 3-pump stations are desirable, torque-flow pumps may be used in certain areas, submersible pumps can be used successfully, and connections with municipal water supply should be... avoided. Dry wells could be maintained dry by properly-functioning sump pumps and elimination of back-siphoning from wet wells. Variable-speed pumping eliminates safety and odor problems in wet wells. Since labor is expensive, telemetering and maintenance by radio-dispatched crews will be adopted. Pump station houses should not include elaborate facilities for workers.
