Zusammenfassung: Ramsey (1972, Biometrics 28, 841-858) developed a prior distribution for a single response curve arising from an indirect biological assay based upon quantal responses. This paper presents the derivation of the exact prior and posterior distributions of an effective dose, which follow from Ramsey's prior. Since the posterior distribution of an effective dose is numerically difficult to compute in a large experiment, methods for approximating this distribution are given. Numerical examples are presented to show the accuracy of the approximate methods. Finally, the usefulness of the present results in assessing Ramsey's prior is illustrated.
