Zusammenfassung: These three volumes are parts of a work planned to be five volumes. The first three volumes present the development of the welfare state from the Second World War to the middle of the 1980's. The fourth volume is a collection of provisions of law, statistical data for the welfare state, and a very detailed annotated bibliography for all the 12 analysed countries. Besides the third volume, which will contain the studies of Austria, Switzerland, The Netherlands and Belgium, the fifth volume, containing a comparative analysis of the problems and tendencies determined in each country, was not issued either. In the introduction study Peter Flora explains the intellectual background of this large-scale research project: 1. the industrial society, the modern state, the development and future of capitalism and mass democracy, and the war and peace are still the main questions of social sciences; 2. the international comparison is the best method to analyse these questions; 3. Europe is an ideal field to make these comparative analyses; 4. for such a research the international cooperation of social scientists is necessary.
